Summer Escape: Muscat and the Green Mountain

That CTS, that Climates, and the Session.

While the Gulf’s coastal capitals swelter through summer, Oman offers a genuine escape upwards: the Jabal Akhdar plateau sits roughly 2,000 meters above sea level, where temperatures run noticeably cooler than the coast below. This five-day route pairs Muscat’s harbor city with two nights on that mountain, giving travelers a real change of altitude and pace within a single short trip, rather than a single-base holiday with day excursions bolted on.

Built for couples and small groups visiting during Oman’s warmer months, the itinerary balances Muscat’s forts, museums and old town with the quieter, cooler air of the Green Mountain, connected by private 4WD transfer.

For international travel, Oman in summer.

Most visitors associate Gulf summers with heat to be endured indoors. Jabal Akhdar changes that equation. Its elevation brings a markedly cooler climate than Muscat and the coast, rose and pomegranate terraces still worked by local farming families, and mountain views that few travelers associate with the Arabian Peninsula at all. Combined with Muscat’s Portuguese-era forts, active souks and museums, the pairing gives affluent travelers comparing Oman against Dubai or Doha a genuinely different proposition: altitude, agriculture and craftsmanship, not just air conditioning.

Day 3: Muscat to Jabal Akhdar via Nizwa

Transfer to Jabal Akhdar is made by private 4WD, with a stop in Nizwa along the way. Nizwa Fort and its adjoining souq are visited en route, alongside Oman’s Across Age Museum, before continuing up to the mountain for check-in and two nights on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

Days 4 to 5: Jabal Akhdar and Departure

Time on the mountain is unstructured, allowing travelers to take in the cooler climate, terraced villages and viewpoints at leisure before the return transfer to Muscat for departure.
